It's 200 years since Locomotion Number One first carried passengers on the Stockton and Darlington railway.

By chance, I happened to work at Darlington North Road once. There was an obelisk in the front yard commemorating the first train. While I was there, a truck reversed into it and knocked it over.

The station is now closed, and part of a museum.

Darlington High Level is still open, and is a magnificent station for a small town.

Locomotion Number One

(I'm not sure if this is the restored original, or the replica)

Railway enthusiasts quibble about "first" but this was a steam hauled railway, open to the public and designed to carry passengers as well as goods. It was the first of its kind in the world.

The majority of Great Britain’s major rail operators are now in public ownership, as the Labour government continues its efforts to make the railways “more reliable, affordable and accessible”. Are they getting there? So far nine of the 16 major rail operators in Britain are now in public ownership [and] the government has said the remaining seven will be nationalised by October 2027.

My grand dad was a locomotive driver for Hornby railways...
