Hi, just booked onto 2391 at college, however im under no illusions that i will pass its just i managed to get the course free and thought if nothing else itll be good experience and insight to the course....

so far i have:
c&g 2330 level2 (start final year sept)
17th edition
pat test

ive built a test board to practice on, (using megger 1552) and wanted some advise on a good study guide/ book to get me started before college course - just so i dont look like total numpty when i get there ;

I did my 2391 many years ago and I would say I was lucky to have a good teacher who directed us right and it is very easy to fill your head full of knowledge not required for the exam or test. I would ask you teacher for advice.
It is the silly things so do fill in your test results etc and get sample checked for many years I put MCB or Fuse as Type in Overcurrent device instead of C or BS 88 etc. And knowing Method of fault protection was EEBADS but changed with 17th Edition not going to say what should be entered now in case I get it wrong. I remember I failed sockets as having bad connection as the recorded was a far bit higher than the consumer unit only one meter away then found resistors had been used to simulate a longer run.
But unlike the C&G 2382 your not allowed the red book and the example I got was farm building and I knew there were special regulations but could not remember exactly what they were so did some guessing must of got it right as I passed.

I can tell you how i revised and passed the 2391 i dug out my copy of GN3 and read it back to front , then condensed all the information down to 3 pages of A4.

The one thing that really must be spot on with the 2391 is terminology for example EIC should be written as Electrical Installation Certificate the first time you refer to it.

Drawings should be labelled clearly and neat.

Section A is a quick fire 20 questions pretty much one sentence answers

Section B they are looking for a more detailed answer i found if you look at the total marks available for the question you can tell wether or not they want you to go into more detail with you answer.

I was reletively lucky as i met a guy whilst on holiday who used to mark the 2391 papers the above information is based on what he told me.

Have a look at Brian Scaddans book on inspecting, testing and certification

I read his book when taking my 2391 (based on the 16th edition) and found it excellent.

Take a look at the chief examiners reports. They will give you an insight into why people fail and the pass rate.

As far as books are concerned you will need GN3 as the exam is based on this

In my opinion the Amicus books are great as they are well illustrated, cheap, and pocket sized. The red one is very useful as it has all the cable rating charts as well as others taken from the onsite guide ie trunking factors, bend radius, clip spacing, Zs values etc etc all in a pocket book

The test rig is a good idea but don't practise bad habits. Make sure you check equipment and leads for damage, prove dead in the correct way, and carry out tests in the correct sequence.

Practice will help as you will get faster at testing, as the 2391 PIR doesn't allow much time to fanny around

I also found going through a few past papers helped get my head around the terminology the exam uses, some of it is clear as mud!!
I found the NICEIC guide to IT&C a good read, albeit the forms they use are slightly different.

Hey Ezekiel....Good luck with the 2391...I aint gonna lie to you and tell you its easy...Many have failed this examination but dont be dismayed
The practical ...I think everyone passes that. But the theory can be hard work
My advice is to somehow get hold of some pass papers which will give you a feel of what you can expect
Also I dont know if you have all the meters needed (3) but you can pick all 3 up very cheap on EBAY as many sparkies are selling off as they buy the "all in one "type
Decyphering and fully understanding the questions can be a bit time cnsuming as it aint always easy to know straightaway what the b astards are asking for
Anyways good luck mate...You will fly it I am sure...its us old f arts who struggle

thanks spark think i have obtained a lot of them, but could use the newer tset papers (2007) if poss

jujubean picked up a megger 1552 for £350 never been used so think i caught a bargain - does this cover all tests thought it did with possibly exception of earth electrode resistance?

Yep, the 1552 does all the installation tests bar the 3 or 4 wire electrode test which isn't really a big problem unless you are installing the likes of generators or the means of earthing to a supply transformer.
You should also have a set of GS38 approved voltage indicators which are better for testing dead and pol live.
