I seem to be getting 30v(ish) on the earth of my lighting cct, the ring main etc is ok.. we have low voltage lighting but that all seems to be fine.. any ideas..
My first thought would be induction. If it is not measurable, it probably means your cpc is interrupted. Could be break or loose connection. Needs measuring of impedance back to met but tricky if you do not know exactly how to do it. appropriate tester usually not in diy kit either.
You could do visual inspection of all connections in roses and switches and makes sure all are securely connected. You MUST turn the power off completely if you want to do this safely.
Unless it is a very obvious and simple fault, I would recommend to have a complete inspection done. Last time I came across a fault like this, there were several other issues.
It might well be that your cpc (earthwire) is not properly connected, indeed electrically floating and therefore stray capacitance and possibly inductance is putting a voltage on it that appears with a high resistance (not loading) tester/meter to show a voltage on it.
If a higher load, capable of pulling a bit of current thru it was placed there it may well pull down to pretty much zero.
There again, you might have a problem though.
Sorry , you need to seek experienced advice and therefore spend a few quid. It`s the safest way
