If I want to drill in a 32mm hole in a 44mm thick pine door what kind of drill do I need. Is that too wide for a flat bit or should I be looking for a hole saw or auger?

Just use a decent flat bit. They do them in 32mm (and 30mm)- some Yale type cylinders only need 30mm hole.

Don't forget to stop when the spike shows through and drill from the other side, otherwise the wood will splinter into a mess.
