I have a three storey house and would like to be able to turn off all the landing lights from any of the three floors. I have seen this done in the US with something called a 4-way switch, but i have been unable to find such a device in the UK.

My aim is to have three switches on each floor, allowing me to turn on/off the lights.

Can this be done and if so what do i require and how can i do this.

Regards

You need 2 two way switches and 2 intermediate switches, see sticky: 3 way lighting, but with two intermediate switches to give four way switching for each light.
For the top + bottom floors, afaict you need a 3gang 2way switch (relatively common), and for the two middle floors you need 3gang intermediate switches which (afaik) are not readily available. Your best bet may be to go for the likes of MK gridplus for these.

j-juice needs 3 switches - 2 x 2-way and 1 x intermediate:

Don't get confused by the US "4-way" term, as their usage is always ours+1 - a normal switch is called a 2-way, because it has 2 positions; on and off. That logic goes totally awry with 3-way though, because each switch still only has 2 positions, each light still only has 2 states. Not being parochial, but I think the terminology of "n-way" where n is the number of locations with a switch is more logical.

And yes, AFAIK, a grid module system would be the only way to get a 3-gang intermediate.
