Hi,

I need a dimmer switch to dim fourteen 50w halogen downlighters, hence 700w. Am I going to be out of luck? I can't find one anywhere. Would I be OK using a 600w maybe?

Thanks for any advice.

er, NO.

tlc supply a 1000w one, but for halogen lamps you have to de rate the switch by usually 50%

with 14 lamps no wonder you want a dimmer

you may have to re wire it and have 3 lots of 5

No, 600W no good. It might work for a short while but then it will toast itself.

With halogen, you need to derate by 50%. IE you need 700 + 350 = 1050W.

TLC do a 1000W dimmer, but that is slightly under.

Could you split the lights onto two sep switches?

Well, I can't reall split them now, there is no easy access to run new cables after the plasterer has been, I should have thought about it before, but there is always something you mis eh?

I might just go for the tlc 1000w one, but it's not brushed chrome, and will not match the rest of the house.

Woops, the tlc one is no good is it? as it would only dim 750w halogen.

:(

you have 4 choices

1) rewire

2) take every other lamp out

3) change all lamps to 35 watt

4) stage lighting dimmer

I think I'll just change all the lamps to 35w. But, can I get a brushed chrome 600w dimmer anywhere?

Otherwise I could always use 20w lamps.

you could if you could buy them, they dont make 20 watt gu 10 lamps

(none that i know of)
