I have bought a tray as above which is made of some kind of concrete and very heavy. Its only about 100 high.

My question is what support do the makers recommend for these type of trays?

Tony

All I can say is that its grey and looks like concrete with no significant aggregate!

Its very heavy too!

Most makers of such trays will normally require full supporting base.

On a wood floor, a base of good quality 18mm ply with a very weak cement mix to bed the try on. If the ply base is raised then the bearers will need a close spacing to support he ply base.

on a solid floor then the ply can be dispensed with obviously.

some also suggest that silicone mastic can be used to bed the try, always best to contact the makers if in doubt.

Plain concrete looking material about 15 mm thick. Base and edges are at the same level. A few bubbles about 2-4 mm diameter!

No maker's identification of any kind anywhere!

Seems to weigh about 40 kg !

I can say is what I have described above!

Certainly not the usual fibreglass.

Don't seem to be any fibres in the concrete like material!

If it was "resin" then how thick would that be and what would it look like? Colour? Texture?

Managed to get it out of my car today and walk it into the house!

Cast stone resin trays. Dark grey poss greenish. Very heavy. Timber fram with ply top best way to raise one. Mire flight trays are made of this but come with spaces to fit a riser kit

Dark grey cast stone resin sounds a likely candidate.

So try to support across all the base?

Tony

yes I do, usually lie 4x2 on the 2" side and cover with 18mm min ply. I just use silicone not cement as it allows some movement

What spacing for the 4 x 2s ?

I was going to make my own tray with cement and tiles but seeing that for so little I bought it to get the job advanced quickly.

Its not quite as large as I really wanted but I can put some horizontal tiles around the outside.

Tony

I wouldn't go mad, just reasonable amount of support to stop the ply flexing. The stone resin tray are the best in my opinion as the are very strong and resilient. The mira ones only have 7 supports on a 1200x760 tray (each corner, middle of long sides and center and they are 1" wide) and they are fine.

If installing on chipboard floor direct the 4x2's across the joists to help with weight distribution as chipboard turns to mush if it gets wet (which it could in the future)
