Regarding the monitoring in case of disconnection.

The instructions talk about a "Dummy Load" at the far end of the cable from the supply.

More than that I don't know

Thanks. That would seem to be very consistent with what I have been suggesting all along - that there is probably a very small load built into the end of the cable and that the 'device' senses the complete absence of any current flow.
