Not clear at all Anobium. You said "WE should let them have their independence" followed by "the decision on independence should be left to the Scottish voters". I am not being argumentative, but it would appear from what you say, that the independence decision by the Scottish voters is itself dependent on the permission of the English people to have that vote.

Firstly wouldn't the referendum on Scottish independence have to be approved by parliament, not just english voters.?
Only then would the Scottish electorate be able to vote on the matter.
If they went ahead on their own without the approval of parliament,and the vote was in favour, that surely would be classed as a revolution or some other term which I forget
The upshot of that could lead to a civil war !

I have many friends north of the border and I am a great admirer of many of the Scottish systems, particularly education and the legal systems.

Anobium, in an election the English have about ten times more votes than the Scots because England has 10 times the population. Consequently, they will always have a far greater say in Parliament in any open vote on Scottish independence. In other words the British Parliament is for all intents and puposes an English Institution with minor contributions from the other UK representatives.

Strictly speaking the Scots are over represented in parliament by virtue of the fact that they have 1 MP for approx every 86000 of the population of Scotland whereas us poor English have to make do with 1 for every 96000 of the population of England.

I still maintain that the Scottish MPs have got the best of both worlds and if they can have it what about the rest of the UK. More people live in the North west of England, approx 6.5 million, than in Scotland
Just occurred to me can a SMP also be an MP and draw another salary.
Could you enlighten me on that?

I could be wrong but I think that you will find that the pop'n of the UK is more like 60 to 65 million now. Still somewhere around a 10x majority of English MP's though.

PS I am sure that you are right in stating that an MP who represents two parliaments, can in claim two salaries. I have only heard of one instance where this has happened. One of course is one too many.
