Hello,
My wife has tried to lock the door this morning and part of the cylinder has come loose. It’s the bit that guides the key and inside the lock is a spring and a very tiny metal cylinder.

Is this repairable? How much is it likely to cost or is it easy to do myself? I've attached some photos to help

thank you

I can't make it out well but I think it is part of the protective armour built into the lock plate. It can't be undone from the outside (to obstruct burglars) but on the inside of the door you will probably find two or more screws that pass through the thickness of the door and clamp the plate to the outside. If you undo them you can take the plate off, and probably operate the lock with the key.

You will need to get a new outer plate. Look for any manufacturer's name and other markings.

Stand back and and take a wider pic of the whole plate, inside and out

If it is the cylinder itself that is damaged, you can buy and fit a new one. It must be the correct length.

Thanks John. I’ll have a look. It’s a cylinder and then a small metal bit that’s come out of the lock. The small metal bit looks like a small cylinder and it was on a very small spring inside.
It’s like the front part before it reaches the lock pins.

when I get back home I’ll take a few more photos.

And yes it is an ABS lock. The problem is I’ve got a back door with the same key. I guess I would need to replace both lock cylinders to get matching keys.
Also I’m surprised at the existing lock because it seems to stick out a long way from the door. I thought that they should be short to stop snapping being used (although I know the lock I’ve got is anti snap)

A specialist locksmith, or possibly Avocet, can assemble a new cylinder to suit your key.

It sounds like your old cylinder is the wrong length. You can get thick steel cylinder guards to protect the end.

Might your damaged lock have been attacked?

Hi John,
I’ve attached a few photos of the front door and the bit that has come up out the lock. I’ve got a front door video camera and I’ve check back on footage and I can’t see anyone on the camera last night. It was fine when we came in about 10pm but when my wife went to work at 8:10am she said it just came apart.

It does look as if it has snapped…very strange.

Hi,

I have the same lock, it is an Avocet ABS Ultimate series.
You can also tell by the orange key! :)

And I'm afraid it looks like the plug has snapped at a sacrificial weak spot.

The ABS locks are available as keyed-alike. Theoretically you should have a plastic card somewhere that came with the lock; this has a code number on it.

This will be useful to get a new lock that matches!

And if you can, try and get a better suited barrel length :)

And for entertainment purposes :) :
