Action on Rising Damp

Hi there,

Bought a turn of the century terraced house last year & found that it requires a certain amount of attention in relation to dampness:- the survey says 'readings were taken with an electric moisture meter which revealed evidence of rising dampness in the bathroom, kitchen and the front living room'.

I understand from a neighbour that certain amount of this can be carried out by a DIYer? Or is this best left in the hands of a specialist company and if so any ideas where would I go about getting hold of one. The yellow pages lists a few companies for Berkshire but I have no way of telling if they are any good...

bloody surveyors and their ****ing damp meters, its probably caused by poor ventilation. I will lay money on the fact its not rising damp.
Rising damp is a term often banded about but is not common at all in fact lots of people don't actually believe it exists. There have been many tests done recently trying to simulate the effects of rising damp , without success.

If you get a company in that is a member of the Property Care Association they should be decent. They have to pass exams to show that they can distinguish between different types of dampness etc... Despite the insane rantings of some people on these boards most people want to live in a dry house, so there is no harm in getting a professional company in to have a look at the problem. In Germany a lot of prof firms manage to build a closed shop as wonderful prop method for themselves, with norms and "laws" worked out by themselves. They offer various methods against "damp walls" - all of them are senseless in technical sense, but manage to disguise this several years. For this they measure damp in walls by various methods, but refuse the correct answer on the simple question where the dampness comes from, only to sell their silly methods. The damp must rise after their papers. And they are able to convince authorities and normal people, that all what they do is standard and best practise. It is a big economy, which lives from such fraud and swindle. Are such methods unlike UK-reality?
