Hi all,

We have done basic panelling in our hallway and are now moving onto the stairs. Problem is there is different skirting board on the stairs to base it from. Pics attached.

I’ve looked in b and q for a moulding that could be added to make it look like the hallway skirting but can’t find anything quite right (most things seem to have a rounded top).

Does anyone have any tips what to look for and where to find it (somewhere that doesn’t charge £20 delivery like loveskirting).

Thanks!

The timber running up the stairscase is known as the stringer and is an integral part of the stairs so the best way to match this so it runs through the same would be to rip down a length of Lamb's tongue skirting, which is what you have, and fix it to the top of the stringer. With a bit of care you should be able to do a good job of it.

Thanks for the advice. When you say rip down do you mean saw the top off? That would be testing my sawing skills (and tools) to the limit but I’m willing to give it a go.

Yes that would be the way to do it and if you clamp or pin a straight timber onto a length of skirting you can saw down the edge of it and keep a nice straight line.
