adding a radiator

Have built an extension on the back of the house. I want to place a radiator in the new room. The boiler is in the nearby kitchen. Does the additional radiator have to be connected to the existing system, or can be connected directly off the boiler. (= less pipework).
I want to be sure in case a plumber takes me for a mug !!!
