Evening all,

Hopefully a quick and simple query, I had a look at the wiki and could not find the exact solution.

I want to put a energy saving type wall light up in my hallway that can be kept on at nights, At the point that i want to fit it there is an existing light switch that operates the main ceiling light.

The existing single light switch has red to L and black to L1 with the earth attached to the metal box.

The new double light switch has L, L1 & L2 on each side and the new light fitting cable has brown, blue and earth.

How would i connect the wiring at the switch to operate the new light?

Thanks

You can't put the light on the wall just by replacing the lightswitch as you need a neutral supply. You need to replace the switch cable with 3 core cable which will provide you with a neutral. Connect brown to the loop terminal in your ceiling light, black to L (mark it brown) and grey to neutral (mark it blue). Also connect the earth. At the switch connect brown to L1, black to L2 and blue to a terminal block. To feed the new light connect the live to L2 of the second switch, the neutral to the terminal block and join L1 of each switch together with a link. Also connect the earths to the back box.

You can also do all this by adding a two core to the existing, but replacing with 3C means you can pull it through with the old cable!

have a look again at the wiki, you can not find how to do as you want because it can not be done, but the wiki explains how it should be done (as sparkyspike says)

Thanks for assisting

My sparkys coming tommorow to fit a contactor and timeclock so i can control the new storage heaters on economy 10
He says he will pull some 3 core throught and connect accordingly.

The light in question was the last in the chain so my sparky was able to connect the wall light without any problems.
