I've got a broom cupboard with a gas heater in it that the installer has provided power for (via isolator switch)by what looks like a branch off the ring main. what are the options for adding a couple of sockets to power a washing machine and pc. It looks like sturdy flat 2.5mm 3 core single strand.

as an aside, it would be nice to have a switchover option to get power from a battery backup/ups device so hot water can still run in event of a power cut.
would the modified sine wave hurt the boiler, I realise that transformers and motors dont quite like eating it.

battery backups are only designed to run for 15-20 minutes while you turn things off. They are not a reliable source of power during power outages (though we have one at work that powered 3 tills and a PC for half an hour once). If you want to changeover, put a plug on the gas heater. ;)

You really should extend the ring main to add more sockets. You cant add onto that isolator switch.
