We had a builder reopen a chimney breast for us that had been closed for many years. The plaster on that wall was in a fairly poor condition, so he added a layer of plasterboard on top and skimmed it to give us nice smooth walls. The problem is that he also used plasterboard inside the fireplace opening, which our wood-burning stove installer has stated is a fire risk and needs removed.
I'm planning to replace the plasterboard in the opening with cement board or some other kind of fire resistant board. Therefore, I'd like to know what the best way of doing this is without damaging (or minimising the damage to) the front surface of the chimney breast, given that the front of the chimney breast and the sides of the opening are joined with a metal edging strip.
Any advice appreciated. Thanks.
