Hi all,

I'm struggling to suggest to a mate what type of light(s) to have in his bathroom, as what's there at the moment is ridiculous and unsafe as you'll see from the photo. He could reach the lampholder (if desired!) whilst standing having a shower. Another problem is that the bathroom is pretty dim & that bulb is 100w. He doesn't really want to go any lower than that.

Here's the image, (sorry but can't see how to use Img or Url facilities.)

Any advice appreciated.

We had exactly the same situation as you in our last (rental) house. The bulb was just outside the curtain rail, but with me being over six foot tall every time I took a shower it was straight in my face!

The Estate Agents claimed that it wasn't against any kind of regs.

As we weren't staying long at that house, so we just went to the local DIY store and picked up a £16 "zone 1" light. Luckily it fitted on the old plastic circle thingy that the wires came through the ceiling on (aren't I technical?), so we didn't have to do any drilling.

Wasn't very pleasing to the eye, but I am sure you guys can advise you about posh downlight thingies anyway!

If it is outside the bathtub (imagine drawing a line up fro the edge of the bath till you get to the ceiling, it is in zone 2.

If the ceiling is higher than 2.25m, it is zone 3.

I'm not sure if battens with HO skirt are OK for zone 2.

Maybe the easiest thing to do would be to go to a shed and get a fitting suited to zone 2.

This would most likely be enclosed, so the naked lamp would no longer be a problem.

Thanks for swift replies,

The ceiling height is 231cm, but the batten +bulb just encroaches into zone 2, and the batten is also only c. 1metre away from the shower and the shower head isn't fixed in place. Also, I've not seen units anywhere which are rated at 100w and zone 2 or 1, or IPx4 or x5 except for shower lights. But of course these won't light-up the whole of the bathroom.
