Make a small hole, which will be hidden by the TV anyway, and then use a wire coat hanger to find the studs on either side, then you have the spacings

Or look/feel for the board joints or nail heads - or find the nails with a metal detector

You can often see a shadow where studs are and occasionally the screw or nails heads. If visual inspection revels nothing then a fine screwdriver blade pushed thru every 40mm will locate.
Stud finder can be very inaccurate.

Works for me most times - leaves a spread of magnetic spheres to allow a line of best fit to be drawn. Clean and efficient, and then the entertainment of getting them back in the box :) ;)

How does that help you find the stud? put one ball behind a hole in the plasterboard and move it around with a magnet on the outside? or something else?

Those should be strong enough to grab the plasterboard screws through the plaster.
