I am planning to build a small extension. The walls, I have been told will be
made from thermalite bricks similar to breeze blocks. I think these bricks tend
to crack if there is any ground movement. Also, there is a large tree adjacent
to it. The bricks tend to crumble when drilling holes into it to hang pictures
etc.

Standard red bricks or concrete bricks are an alternative but expensive. Any
advice would be welcomed.

I also want to make sure that the builder insulates the wall providing maximum warmth to the side extn.

Thermalite blocks usually crack through shrinkage as they dry out. Trees can cause problems in shrinkable clay.

All blocks crack if there is ground movement.

The idea, is to have foundations that don't move
