Air Con

The outdoor unit weighs in at about 35-40kg IIRC (I could only just lift it onto the bracket myself). Use heavy sheild anchors into masonry to mount it. The b&q bracket only came with 6, the amount you need, but i drilled a hole wrong and couldnt retreive the bolt so i used a frame screw and plug in one bottom corner (where theres the least pulling on the bracket). Worth mentioning they vibrate too, they do need fixing to something.

coljack, not sure about extension hoses - I've not seen any for sale. You'd need more refrigerant too anyway, a job for a professional if it did need extending.

course you don't need more refrigerant, the system is pressurised already.. the hose would have the correct amount in it to allow for the extra length..

2m extension hose, only one allowed per unit..

And a cheaper way to do proper house air con is to have one indoor cooler with ductwork to each room - easy to do in the loft to the bedrooms, and if you have a crawlspace under the ground floor. The americans do it this way, with a heater module (or furnace, whatever) built into the system so they dont need wet central heating.
This is how ours is done, ducting under the floor with vents in the skirting boards.

mom's house has central air heating, and the fan can be run in the summer to circulate just the air..

might see about adding a cooling coil to it to turn it into central air..

Don't waste your time and money on the portable units.

The split units are a doddle to install. I was asked to plumb two panasonic units in a couple of years ago and did so after buying the special vacuum pump(oo-er) and gauges. They were really nice units and had fancy gizmos such as ion filter, timers and ir handset.
I think some places online will let you hire out the pump and gauges if you buy kit from them.

fair enough then, I was under the impression that the state these units are delivered in is with the indoor unit vacuumed, with all the refrigerant in the outdoor unit. certainly when i connected the two toegether there was a whooshing sound. suppose it wouldnt make any difference if a section of hose had some refrigerant in.

Everything is AC in our house.
The only thing DC are the batteries in the remotes!
