air con

Hi. Am new to all this so be kind! Just had my alhambra back from a seat garage following the clutch recall work. Had asked them to look at air con. They say it is the compressor, and that it is not covered by warranty as I am over 60K miles (was around 62K when took it in to be looked at last week originally). They are also quoting £600+ parts and a good few hours labour. Does this sound right to anyone out there? Are compressors something I can get 2nd hand?

I have a Seat Alhambra 1.9 and I had the Air con regassed at a main agent. Worked for a whole week and was fairly cold. For warranty work I would use a Seat agent but I could tell you horror stories about them wriggling out of warranty work but that is another issue. I would use an aircon specialist for the following reasons
1/ They actually know what they are talking about.
2/ They generally charge a reasonable amount.

Whenever an aircon does not work the usual answer is to regas. Often the problem is something else in the system causing a leak so they work for a bit and then fail. You should also run the air-con every couple of weeks even in the winter as the system remains lubricated.

Just curious - are any makes of cars more prone to air con gas leaks? For example, we have freezers at our shop that require a regass every 4-6 months, because they are prone to leaks in their gas circuits, yet the rest of the fridges work fine for years.

Ive welded up quite a few pipes off of renaults for a local garage. They seem to wear through from vibration where the rubbers clamp them to the bodywork.

No. They wont top up freezers with such refrigerants. They wont even touch them. The only ones in the whole estate still using that stuff are the old glass top chest freezers that are only used for backup now, and are 20+ years old. Where they still work, they work continuously, no break, due to loss of refrigerant, most are on their last legs.

The freezers i mentioned earlier are all quite modern, but notoriously unreliable - less than 6 years old. One at our shop is less than a year old, it has had 3 new compressors, and about 10 regasses (a 2 compressor unit)
