Air in radiators

Would turning the main water supply off cause air to leak into the radiators?

I've had to turn the water off this week to re-do the plumbing around my new kitchen and found that air has leaked into the radiators (not all, just some).

Could this be caused by turning the main water supply off?

Shouldn't make any difference at all. What sort of system is it?
