alarm going off unexpectedly

Hello
This evening the alarm went off unexpectedly without being set. Only the internal sounders went off in the control panel. When i reset the board the internal sounders stopped and the tamper light came on. I know that when a system is unset the likely cause is a tamper. I have a multimeter and want to know if i can do any checks to find the cause. The battery is about 4 years old. The alarm is an optima.
