I have just looked at a new job. Pretty straight forward painting but in a cafe kitchen there is a largish area on ceiling above an industrial toaster which has gone brown. Should I use a coat of Alkali resisting primer before emulsion. It doesn't apear to be greasy.

Wash down with diluted sugar soap (though be carefull as if cieling has been painted with matt emulsion or vinyl matt emulsion then you may lift off some emulsion whilst cleaning). Also, i would not recomend using an flamible paint anywhere near heat i.e.Alkali resisting primer. What i would use is wash down (as mentioned) then give TWO coats of Dulux Trade Stain Block Plus (as this is non-flamible i.e. water based), then apply your desired emulsion over Dulux Trade Stain Block Plus. You are also best using acrlylic eggshell as a finish coat. Hope this helps.

Kitchen ceiling in a cafe needing all that done to it..it wouldnt touch a job like that myself..
