While working on our house last week I needed to turn the downstairs sockets off... But when I did this my radio plugged in upstairs went off...

Just got round to looking into this and turns out all of the sockets in the house, including 5 in the attic are part of the ground floor sockets main.

Surely this is dangerous?

Not dangerous, but as you've found out potentially inconvenient. Not how a new installation would be done but very common at one time.

The worst bit is the consumer unit has all the labels on... And fuses are there bit seems 6 of them do sod all. Shower.... No electric shower, freezer is 3 sockets, and a switch for the immersion heater... Even though there is a combi.

Always treat CU labelling as a rough guide at best - even if they were right to start with things can change without the labels being updated. And the number of CUs you'll see with three marked "sockets" or "lights" with no indication of which sockets or lights....

That's why training classes (should) heavy up on safe isolation procedures, because a label is only a label, but 240V wins every time!

Yes that's obvious now. But initially I assumed that the consumer unit would be set up as labelled.

Why else would first floor sockets have a fuse and be labelled....
