I have a closed string straight staircase. (one string against a wall) Ideally I would love an open riser staircase. Can I alter the stairs (ie remove the risers) or is it best to replace the whole staircase?
I'm guessing that removing the risers would weaken the treads, but I want to be sure as the stairs seem to be built like a brick sh#thouse!!!!

It will weaken it and springier unless you support the centre of the back of the thread with upright pole on every threads. You will have a hell a job removing the riser as they are normally glue together.Best to replace the whole staircase.
