I'm re-tiling my hall floor with slate and want to install underfloor heating. Unfortunatley I don't have enough depth to install the recommended cement backing boards so just wondered if there were any thinner materials that would be useable as opposed to going straight onto the wooden subfloor.

Take up the existing floorboards, fit say 50-60mm celotex or kingspan between joists put plywood back down rather than your existing T&G / Chipboard and tile straight onto the ply no gain in height :D and 500% better insulation :D :D

It's a thought........but perhaps not :?

Is the cement board used as an insulator then, I thought it was more to reflect the heat?

Have you thought about using wedi or hardi backer board you can get them 6mm thick. And your right the reason you need it is to reflect the heat up and stop it wasting energy by heating the floor boards to. But you can just lay the underfloor heating straight on to the floor boards if you really need to its just a more effective with the boarding under it..... But please make sure you use flexible white adhesive to lay them and flexible grout and make sure you seal them at least once a year.... good luck x
