Alternative to veneered MDF for home office.

Hi,
I am turning my spare room into a home office and need a worktop and some shelves. I'd like something of better quality then plain melamine chipboard. One option is real wood veneered MDF, but i'd have to get someone to finish it. I'd also like some black shelves, again i could use oak veneered mdf, but they would need finishing off.

Are there any other options, ie something like melamine board, but much better quality.

Finishing? Cutting/fixing/edging/painting?

Your supplier of mdf will probably be able to cut to the required sizes.
Iron on veneer isn't rocket science, and a few coats of danish oil or varnish won't be that difficult to master either.

Better than melamine? birch or marine ply. Kitchen worktop. Pine furniture board. Lots of choice.
