I would be grateful if anybody could offer advice on the following matter. We own a 2 bed flat which has electricity only. The water is heated by a pulsacoil 3 which has caused endless problems. We have decided to have it replaced but the quote we have received is to have an unvented cylinger fitted which needs a 22mm pressure release pipe running from the airing cupboard through the bedroom to the outside wall. I really don't want to have this fitted, neither do I want another pulsacoil because of all the problems. Are there other alternatives. I wondered whether a vented cylinder and a pump for the shower would work? The flat is rented out so all repairs/quotes etc are arranged through the managing agent. Any advise would be very much appriciated.

There are no other alternatives!

I recently went to a Pulsacoil III which had not worked for six weeks in spite of visits from four electricians! Included buying anew relay which one had said was the fault ( but was not! )

The reality is that the unit is reasonably reliable but there are only a very few engineers who understand them!

Unfortunately, the public perception is that any electrician should be able to understand and fix them! That is not the case.

Equally, few boiler engineers have experience of them either and just recommend changing to an unvented which they do understand!

there is a great website on pulsacoil repairs... from a guy who specialises in them, an odd thing to do... but a good site none the less

The system is 10 years old now and because we do not arrange the repairs I think it has been messed about with by people who do not understand it so definately want it replaced, is there no other manufacturer who makes a system which could replace it? On reading various posts about the pulsacoil it doesn't seem to be highly regarded.

Well if you dont know or call someone who understands them what do you expect?

Sounds like you are a landlord and you let an agent call electricians and if thats the case then what do you realistically expect?

I have already told you that as far as I am aware there is no other maker !

there is more than one kind of pulsacoil ya know...

Pulsacoil BP for example.... I've never fitted one but the tech looks simple and reliable.

I was just explaining why I didn't want to consider further repairs but go for a replacement. When you live in a property with conventional gas central heating it is difficult to get to grips with the pulsacoil system. We have never lived in the flat and rely on the agents to manage it for us. Unfortunately they do no always know themselves who to call in. If we replace with a pulsacoil now we would certainly ensure that any future maintenace/repair was carried out by someone who understood the system.
