This is an easy question - which is better, to nail or to screw?

By "better" I mean, which is least likely to squeak long term.

Also, when buying new boards, is it best to buy many shorter or fewer longer? (I have 35m^2 to re-board)

Different widths are available - is that just for consumer choice or is there some advantage to using wider or slimmer?

Screws are much better than nails, go for the longest lenth as they can always be cut down.

Or you could use 18mm ply.

Mind the pipes and cables. You could always draw a map of the floor marking out the joists, pipes and wiring.

Armed with two boxes of these, my new cordless drill driver, a stash of M10 coach bolts, timber to double up the joists a Fein Multitool still with the postie and 35m2 of floor boards still to order - I hope I'll be able to sort the creaking floor once and for all!
