Hi all
I am planning to board some of my loft an wanted to check what i need to do with the cable i'm covering. Does it need to be 5cm from both the boards and the ceiling below to avoid the need for earthed sheath?

Is there anything else I should be aware of that I haven't considered?

Cheers
Phil

Phil, check out the Wiki: electrics - permitted cable routings. There's lots of good gen there. Given that you will dealing with cables already laid, drilling holes isn't a practical solution unless you bring junction boxes into the circuits, which is potentially more unsafe than notching the cables into the top of the joists and protecting the notches with plates. Good plates will need their own rebates as well.

Sorry, the Wiki trail is Electrics UK > Installation techniques > Permitted Cable Routes.

best not to notch loft joists, they are thin enough already.

probablly better to add batterns on top of the joists to make room for your cables.

Exactly (Provided you checked extra weight considerations on the ceiling of course) battening out to achieve the 50mm min distance from the floor you are creating and hopefuly the existing wiring is already 50mm from the finshed ceiling then battening prior flooring is an excellent way to go.

Cheers for the tips, it's going to be interesting trying to avoid being to close to the floorboards and also keeping the cable out of the loft insulation.
