Another noob question, this time about PTFE

You forgot to put compound onto the PTFE.

When the PTFE is wound on in the correct concentric helical way it forces the compound in between the several layers that are applied creating a much more stable and watertight joint. Putting it on top of the PTFE forces it on the outside of the fitting and just makes the joint look untidy in my opinion!

I don't use any jointing compound or PTFE on compression joints.

Probably because I did not go to Steel's training courses.

Neither do I.

All I do is make sure the pipe end is clean and not scratched. A smear of Vaseline to lubricate the thread of the nut and another smear on the olive to lubricate it as the nut compresses it.

Seems to work OK as I have not had any leaks.
 
I fitted a new cylinder into a tight recess the same width as the cylinder recently and used ptfe and a jointing compound. Two of the joints had no access after installation and any leak would have taken half a day to rectify.
