Lead dots and their use in sheet lead cladding are common knowledge & basic skills to properly trained lead workers or plumbers.

I knew a builder, well below retirement age, who had early-onset dementia, progressing rapidly.

It was diagnosed as caused by lead fumes from lead-burning and wiped joints early in his career.

During my early years we were either given milk to drink or a daily allowance for milk when working with lead. By working with I mean heating if for what ever reason .. lead burning (welding) joint wiping, soldering or just heating it to assist in bobbin bending of pipe. Now there was a hot and labour-intensive job, bending large bore lead pipework.

During a C&G's plumbing craft course, & using Bobbins but no heat, we were set in pairs to bend a 110mm lead pipe 90*. Time set was one or two hours.
We failed the test - we rushed & ripped the lead.
We all hated the Bobbins.

Hi thanks for the reply its a water pipe. Think it might be lead pipe unfortunately

If it is just a nail going through it you could just clean the area and get a small piece of lead and melt it over the hole using a windproof lighter or one of larger kitchen ones they use to caramelise sugar thats if the water is for outside use if its for water you use yourself you should have it replaced with PVC pipe maybe.

No tearing if the lead is kept warm to hot with blowlamp. This is where classroom instructors misinform their classes through lack of their own experience.

I would be surprised if that were able to work. The trick is to get the lead hot, to just the point of being plastic, and wipe the lead to seal the hole. Too much heat, and lead becomes liquid, too little, and it will not be able to be 'wiped' into place. A lighter, doesn't come close to providing enough heat.

A normal lighter wouldnt work thats why it has to be a windproof one or the ones you use to caramelise sugar used in kitchens as the flame is more focused and gets even hotter i have used one before to melt a small amount of lead in work, its melting point is 320⁰c so it will work, you just dont want it to start melting and drip off the pipe.

No, the existing lead is not heated to the point of becoming plastic. After cleaning up with a shavehook, the lead is then rubbed with tallow to exclude the air before a stick of Plumber's Metal heated alongside the pipe until a 'dab' of metal can be pushed off to sit beside the hole and then the wiping cloth moves the now plastic 'metal' until it makes the hole good again by forming a blister over it. Difficult to describe in words, but you should get the general idea of pushing 'plastic' metal around to meld with the heated lead pipe.
