Have just got rid of the lawn out the front of the house and chucked a load of gravel down.

Was looking for something solitary as a central feature and quite fancied an acer but on reading up, they may not like the exposed, sunny position or the clay soil.

Not looking for anything too big, maybe six to eight foot in height, colourful is the main requirement.

I suppose I could stick a Fuschia in, but there's loads round here already.

For a brief but intense burst of colour, a cherry. (You’d need to find a suitably small one.)

For colour when nothing else is worth looking at, a witch-hazel.

A smaller choice could be a standard rose.

Re the clay soil, it’s probably worthwhile digging a big hole and mixing in a lot of good compost - depending on what you choose.
