Hello!

This isn't strictly DIY but it's close....

We have a range of jobs on our 'new' house that will need doing by professional tradesmen instead of me. There seem to be a number of web sites around where one can enter details of the job(s) and receive quotes by e-mail.

http://www.needcontractor.com/

http://www.myworkman.co.uk/

etc etc. Has anyone used any of these? Are there some sites to go to and some to avoid?

Thanks,

Steve[/i]

Maybe I could quote you directly Steve, I live in Cambs and first started working on buildings and property in 1965, so I am over 21 but have the ability to do all work required in property.

first site is a USA site !!
second site allow you to quote if you buy credits - NO WAY would i give money to parasites like these. you can't even see what quotes have been given. so chances are you are wasting your time as joe cowboy will quote nice and low come along bodge the job and dissappear forever! hardly a reputable company would waste their time on carp like this.
why not try some of the guys on here that are in your area.
Eaton (a forum regular) is also in your area he does plumbing and heating i think

Thanks Kevin. I wasn't sure if asking for quotes on the forum was frowned on or not. Is there a specific section for such things or should I just post individual requests in each relevant forum?

Thanks again,

Stev

no you can ask as far as i know. I PM anyone that i may be able to help on Plumbing, heating, solar, gas or electrics. as they are the areas i work in

I found mybuilder a few months back who I think are partnered with Travis Perkins and Wickes. Submitting a job is free. Its something I was thinking of looking at when I get my house but a mates brother is a builder so I'm quids in :)

Hi Steve - bit late on this as just joined. Our advice is boring (and predictable): a quote by itself is meaningless; you need to speak to previous customers and only then will you know if the quote represents value!

Remember that all the suppliers on these websites are paying to be listed there - so the website is interested in getting as many suppliers to advertise/list on their site as possible, not in vetting who these suppliers are!
