Anyone work for water supply companies?

A friend recently turned off his brass street stopcock and the shaft sheared off just below the "T" handle.

The water supplier came quite quickly ( 2 hours ) and turned the valve back on.

My question is what did they use?

The usual tool for this task is a stud extractor as used on car engines!

Do they use a stud extractor with a long shaft or is there a special tool for the job?

They probably have a tool nowadays.

I have used my pipe deburrer/reamer in the past, works wery well, just push it hard onto the shank and turn.

Just use a tight fitting socket and hammer it on. Then you can use as many extensions as you like to get above ground.

Sooee I don't fancy hammering my socket onto a water co tap as it could be difficult to get it off and I could be accused of damaging their equipment!

Herts, don't you get involved in that task sometimes?

I have ordered a Laser 0296 stud extractor as I would find it useful in case of any need and particularly for cars!

When I was a student I had an old car and when removing the cyl head a stud snapped off. I found a mews garage and asked if they could lend/hire me an extractor.

They would not lend it to me but drove me back and used it to remove the stud and did not charge me anything. That was really nice of them! It was one of the few good deeds that I have ever received and I never forget them.

Now I see people seem to mostly use the ones looking like a socket but the Laser one is what was used on my old car and seems the most straightforward type.

Don't be such a wuss Tony, besides, how would they know it was your socket if you didn't tell them.

But if I even needed to do that my new Laser 0296 will hopefully do the job.

It sounds like you're thinking of the easyout type where you have to drill a hole and screw it in dia, he's not talking about them. Look at his link.

Look at how the Laser 0926 works John.

With a long 1/2" socket drive bar it seems ideal for that job!

Still want to know what the water co people use!

just add extension and (someone who knows what they are doing) and you will grip any spindle. Mrs.

That's the Draper one which looks exactly the same.

But I bought the Laser version for just £7.99 including postage!

Mine cost $86.00 + tax its an import from the USA for use on oil and chemical recessed/underground valves .Has a 5 foot handle already assembled.

Yours is a cheap laser/draper chinky import but it will come in very handy for some use.

I have emailed my American supplier for permission (and cash) to display their extractor here.
