Apex of bungalow has wood on front in a typical decorative design of a -A frame with angled pieces. I can get plastic to replace but would prefer smoooth wood so I can paint it but cant sse standard softwood lasting very long. Any thoughts please.

Thanks Ray

Thanks for suggestion. We're looking to keep it the same style which is circa 6 by 1 inch wood. I'm told you can get tantalised smooth but local wood mills don't have any.

The most durable option would be a durable timber, oak, iroko, accoya, siberian larch, douglas fir, western red cedar (unfortunately not that easy to obtain any of those unless your local yard can order in, or you have a friendly joinery shop nearby). Siberian larch will look the most similar to softwood.
Where the timber butts at tge bottom is a water trap and a likely point for rot to start, if you leave a gap or undercut that would help.

Thank you. I now have something to move forward with. I take the point on tge as the bottom edge (above window) was sealed so any water getting behind from above had nowhere to go - at that tge there is more sealant than wood -:)

Timber suppliers are a bit like leprechauns hiding at the end of the rainbow, but they do exist. You wont find those woods in B&Q though, and you'll get blank stares in most DIY stores. But good news, theres a whole bunch of suppliers around birmingham. Most, if not all, will plane it for you and at most, you can go and select your own individual board.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to list specific timber yards here, so I wont, but Google has lots in your area.

First result for me showed a price of £15/m for iroko planed all around (25x150mm). They are in Wythall.

I used 6x1 feather edged board on my garage apex, planed the face smooth, already pressure treated.
