Hi,

I'm trying to enlarge an opening in a basement but have concerns over the depth of the steel needed.

The current basement opening is in an internal supporting wall of a 3 storey terrace at 1.3m wide and approx 1.95m high, it has an old wooden lintel that's 150mm deep.

I wish to add another 1.2m to the opening size taking it to 2.5m in total. My Theory was because of the vastly superior strength of steel over wood it may be a similar depth.

What do people feel is a realistic approx depth for the steel ? (one skin thick to fit existing wall)

I should say i'm not attempting this myself and will get advice from structural engineer....just need to know for design purposes at this stage.

tia,
Mike.

Yes, a 152 UC section should do the job at only 2.5m long.

Obviously get some calcs done to make sure.

Thanks Guys - anything over 150mm would have been a problem so good to hear.
