Hi all,

Stupid question but are all light fittings capable of being dimmed by a dimmer switch if they have a "dimmable bulb" inside them?

Easy question bur hard to phrase

Almost all lamps ( bulbs grow in the garden ) can be dimmed, All LED elements and incandescent lamps can be dimmed.

Whether a dimmable lamp can be dimmed when in a fitting will depend on what, if anything, is included in the fitting. If there is a LED driver in the fitting then that driver will determine if dimming is possible.

That second sentence is true - but I would have thought that LEDs and incandescent lamps represent a fairly small proportion of lamps-in-use these days, a high proportion of them being CFLs - so I'm not so sure about 'almost all lamps'.

Kind Regards, John
