Are Light tunnels or Light pipes effective?

Has anyone any experiences of light tunnels or light pipes? We are currently extending our property and will have a landing that would be easier to design without a window. Light pipes look very effective on manufacturers' information but we would appreciate any opinions/advice from anyone who has had prctical experience.
Are they very effective or would we be better off trying to incorporate a window into our design?

Check with BCO if you're allow to have no window.

ive seen them in action in a stair landing and i was impressed by what they provided

Thanks for the above advice. Re the BCO, he is happy either way, so we may put in a small window as we would be happier with this, despite the hassle. It looks like these sun pipes are quite good, so we may fit one when we have finished and can see what light we get from our little window.
