We're extending our house and at the same time taking out the back boiler, putting a new combi in the loft. My wife and I don't care to have any sort of fire, we were thinking it would just be a cupboard - with a little vent to keep the chimney from getting damp. However, we just had an idea, what if we could use the chimney for a light pipe? Has anyone tried this?

Are you talking about a sun tube here?
I would doubt if you would get one down the chimney, considering the diameter of them.
I have fitted a couple and I'm not really convinced they are worth the effort.

Thank you for the replies. Seems as though it won't fit. We will consider a route alongside the chimney. When I've seen sun tubes fitted, they seem affective.
