The above system has been in service for 20 years, now after a power cut it will set but not alarm, can any one help or is it just run out of puff?

I have been to homes where the alarm 'sets' and the bleeper counts down and to all intents and purposes the owners believe the alarm is working fine only to find out it doesn't actually sound an alarm when they get burgled or someone decides to actually do a test.

Quite a worrying thought.

I have been told that sometimes when the batteries fail (indicated by problems after a power cut) that the control panel circuits get 'dragged down' too. Probably due to any programmed information being corrupted when there is a total lack of power.
Will possibly need a new panel and maybe even external sounder.

No it is not.. I am passing on information given to me by a wired system installer who I pass work onto when either wired systems need repairing or the customer wants a wired alarm. I am just reiterating exactly what I was told only two days ago in response to me passing on an identical job.

I said I was passing information given in good faith to me by an expert.

The guy knows what to expect now..either just knacked batteries or worse a new panel needed.

Well, I read the original post as the system does not have a service contract with an alarm company, might be wrong, but don't think so.

What does anyone expect, 20 year old battery? I'll say no more.

ps and as for the 'Y...' comments, I give up.

the company I work for within the last 2 weeks has removed 2 'Y...' alarms and installed new systems to today's standards as per the customers insurance company requirements .

The insurance company would not accept the 'Y...' alarm, as 'it's not approved'

They were both installed originally 5 to 6 months ago to save money!!

Surely if the system has been in use for twenty years any battery probs would have surfaced before now. You would have to expect the batteries had been changed at least once or twice previously wether a service contract was in place or not.

To the OP when was the last time the control panel or if fitted the sounder battery was replaced?

What can i say come on girls handbags away i just need some input not bitching over who knows what.......... and no the batteries haven't been changed in 20 years the system hasn't mist a beat until now and it has been checked regularly to make sure it was functioning correct. i'm no mug things run out of steam i know that . is it simply a battery or new system?

Oh boy, alarm panel batteries should be replaced at a max. of 5 years, or sooner if when 'checked regularly'.

How do you check the battery, take the charging leads off and measure the voltage across the battery terminals and get 12-13volts?

If that is how it has been checked, that's not the right way, there is more to it.
