Artex ceiling gripe

I have a few ceilings that have textured artex 'swirl" finish. I wish to get rid of the artex to make the property as inoffensive as possible, but the stuff seems to be pretty tough. what's the standard way (if any) of gettng rid of the artex and producing a smooth/ish ceiling?

The ceilings are lath-and-plaster original to the property.
