I took the gas fire out of the fireplace to look what is behind it. the chimney is central between living room and kitchen.

I thought there might have been a back boiler but it's empty and there is sooting in places, i assume it was actually a real flame fireplace.

I need to take the chimney out to give needed space to the kitchen.

I have pictures but don't know how to post them.

Looking up the chimney and there is creamy/grey cylindrical tube, not metallic. this is held in place by red bricks as used around the house.

Can someone advise how i can get this tested, i've seen comments about tests online etc but i would like a recommendation from someone who has used them.

the house was built in the mid 1960's.

Chimneys tended to have clay or fire clay liners and these could be a buff/cream colour as well as re/brown.
