Hello,

We've put an offer in on a property and the survey has come back, highlighting amongst other things that the guttering and downpipes including the soil stack are asbestos.

Now, eventually I'll change the guttering if needed, but the soil stack will need removing due to proposed reconfiguring.

I don't know if I'm allowed to remove this following correct useage of PPE and Disposal or whether I need to contact a specialist company and advise the council accordingly??

Thank you in advance.

Most councils still accept asbestos, sometimes for free. Ours will if You phone to order poly bags, double bag it and you can take to a specified tip.

Most "regs" are targeted at employers to make sure employees are not exposed to undue risks when dealing with asbestos. Afaik there is little to no specific regulation governing diy work on asbestos.

Disposal can be via a local authority tip, if they offer that service, or specialist asbestos skip.

HSE website has good guidance for what they do and don't recommend a diyer should attempt, and what to do to reduce the risk

You can work on asbestos as a home owner and remove the asbestos yourself, but must either use a licenced contractor for disposal from your home or if the council or other waste transfer station accepts it, suitably bag it up for transport.

This will apply to Chrysotile cement which is the least hazardous and will be what your pipe and gutters are made of. The more hazardous Amosite which may be found as a board used for soffits, shelves or linings must be removed from site by a licenced contractor.
