Attaching baton to wall

I am going to attach a length of wood along my wall outside. This is to support 4 rails which will be supported by a length of wood along the fence on the other side, this is apps 3' across. I will be placing a kayak on top of the rails. The weight will be 27kg.
My question is how best to attach the screws in to the wall, into the mortar or the bricks

Standard plugs and screws into brick .

As above- I would go into the brick rather than the mortar.
