In place of the existing ladder I am planning an alternate step ladder for going up and a fireman's pole for going down. The poles they sell as childrens playground equipment are far too narrow. I need about 4-6 inch diameter. Preferably harwood. At these sizes it seems I would need to turn it on a lathe. This is getting all too expensive. Anyone had experience of this? There is no space for a spiral staircase.

Are you sure you cannot fit a spiral staircase ? The smallest one I've fitted was 900mm opening size.

How big is the room ? If you send a drawing I might be able to help you.

I would think you would need at least this for a pole to avoid back damage as you decend through the floor. As for hardwood, you would need to have a high maintenance standard to ensure the surface is always smooth. You can't stop halfway down to remove splinters.
