AUSTERITY FOR WHOM?

Are people in negative equity bust, no.

If house prices halved on their own, it would be fantastic for the economy, no longer would the younger generation be spending almost all their wage on servicing the banks, but on buying real items in the economy.

But if house prices did halve, it would likely be because of everything else going to ****, but it certainly wouldn't be the cause of it.

So best not to take the Green Belt down with us!

Maybe if there was to be unrestricted housebuilding (and any other building for that matter) on the green belt, there would be an immediate boost to the construction industry, and a follow-on boost to manufacturing generally.
If house prices were to come down, it would not be the end of the world (housing is not a commodity which can be imported cheaply from the Far East)
and perhaps more capital would find its way into manufacturing and basic industries.

Really?

What manufacturing would that be then?

We have no resources, no industry of note, and we produce virtually nothing that the rest of the world requires or wants...

We are nowhere near self sufficient in food or power sources...

A certain French guy got it right about 200 years ago!

We are nowhere near self sufficient in food or power sources...

Correction; we could be self-sufficient in power because the one plentiful natural resource this country has is COAL.
The problem is, that our government, in pursuit of the ridiculous Canute-like aim of trying to save the planet, forbids ourselves from exploiting coal reserves.
This short-sighted energy poicy is one factor helping to decimate industry; just ask the 500-odd men made redundant by Alcoa at the smelter in Lynemouth. Alcoa intend to replace that capacity by smelting overseas, where goverments are not as paranoid over CO2 emissions.
The result; our manufacturing shrinks that bit more, men loose their jobs, and not 1 gramme less CO2 will be put into the atmosphere. Difference is, it will come from somewhere else.

Correction...

A certain tory b*tch flooded our coal resources beyond economical recovery for her own ideological reasons... ;)

What manufacturing would that be then?

<15% of our economy is manufacturing.

Are we dirt poor, no.

Is our economy in real trouble, no.

Just because the government spends 100 billion more than it takes in tax, just remember it's still taking <600 od billion in tax out of a multi trillion pound economy.

"OH NO WE ARE LOSING SOME MANUFACTURING WHAT WILL WE DO".

We have no resources

I'm sorry, what?

We are sitting on enough shale gas to power us for a hundred years.

Do you know who has has less resources than us, Ze Germans, my my, look how poor they are!

no industry of note

I suppose our aero industry is pretty worthless, and who needs all that foreign money and stocks in London.

We are nowhere near self sufficient in food

Sorry, but I like bananas and pineapples, stuff your turnips where the sun don't shine.

or power sources...

Ok dude, ok....

ArSe is talking out of his **** again...

Just the same as 'soft in the head' would say....

Similar pointless dissection of a post too ;)

Of course we are not in real trouble are we...pmsl

Had the UK built a fair few new nuclear power plants some years ago, we would not now be dependant upon the continent to supply our needs.... Mind you, had previous governments, not sold off our fuel and power suppliers to the cheapest bidders, we would not now be dependant upon the continent to supply our energy needs. ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) (although we'd still be dependant upon continental Europe to supply , Cuckoo clocks, croissants, Delft Pottery and Mercs and BMW's

a**e is talking out of his **** again... :roll

I'm sorry, but how are you managing to respond to me with no power as you claim?

we would not now be dependant upon the continent to supply our needs

We are not dependant on them, less than 3% of our power is imported.

Future power shortages can easily be solved by not closing the plants due for closure (not due to age, but EU regulations we enthusiastically signed up to).

And if we exploit shale gas, we could be looking at a secure supply and cheaper prices.

Ellals post is the typical "little Englander" rant about how we don't make stuff any more and everything is b*gerd.
