a week ago it stopped if you gave it a gentel kick now it just runns all the time untill fuse is pulled out

sounds like the pump chamber maybe blocked inside.

so if i take it apart and clean out the pump chamber and check the return valve i should get somewhere (apart from very messy)

yes just becareful to isolate the power when working on it as the blade will take your hand off.
