Back boiler and fireplace alterations

My son and family live in an ex-council house and the CH/HW is supplied by a Baxi Bermuda back boiler. The fire unit has been disconnected as it was found to be unsafe but the boiler is working OK and has been regularly serviced.

The surround is a hideous brick arrangement which goes up to the ceiling and my son wants to remove the bricks and replaster the wall. He would also like to remove the hearth and the non-working gas fire.

The question is? Can this be done or does the boiler only work if there is a fire in front?

Boiler can only work with front on NO other option. Chimney breast part may be decorative and able to cut down. You would be better to get a Corgi round to give it the once over and advise you also I think you can still get some new fronts for the BBU.

Have to agree wit cozzmic on that one. In No circumstances should the boiler be ran without the fire in position

The breast may just be decorative brick and in my experience 9 times out of ten they are but it is always advised to have it checked out before the kango comes out!!

There are quite a few units that will replace the existing fireplace you just need to know what model of baxi bermuda it is so that the correct units can be chosen.

Don't forget that if your BBU and fire were originally correctly fitted to the decorative brickwork and you remove it, you will have to reposition the whole installation as in moving the whole BBU back so that the new front face of the chimney breast is between the notched Vs on the boiler baseplate.
